The Hairy Saint reproduces transcripts of 26 interviews that Dr Nicholas Greenwood conducted with Harald Onufrak, who murdered the notorious conspiracy theorist Rexx Janes in 2013 and was then confined to the Connecticut state facility until his death in 2015. Obsessed with his family name, Onufrak dwells on Saint Onuphrius, a 4th century hirsute hermit, a bundle of neurons in the lower spinal column called Onuf's nucleus, and Dr Bronislaw Onuf, who had discovered this nucleus, which activates muscles needed for urination, defecation and sexual orgasm. Onufrak claims to possess an unknown, unique power over his own nucleus enabling him to disrupt someone else's bodily functions. He also claims that he wanted to use this power for social good and did not realize it could be deadly. Dr Greenwood has added comments to the unfolding interviews, which touch on many issues of the day; readers will discover that Onufrak and his interlocutor are engaged in an absorbing philosophical dialogue.Dr Nicholas Greenwood is a psychiatrist in private practice, consultant in forensic psychiatry, member of the Psychiatric Security Review Board for the state of Connecticut, and affiliated physician with Connecticut Valley Hospital. He lives with his wife and three children in West Hartford, Connecticut.
