This tale of blood, strife, courage, and friendship I am to convey is true. My city is torn by the strife of the Civil War and Martial Law. But beneath this war between men and states, there is a deeper evil lurking in Baltimore. An evil that, unless checked, threatens to destroy ALL mankind.

As a former physician, I discovered my part to play in an eons-old battle between this world and creatures of the "other-natural" along with my friends and companions. Mare Adams, a businesswoman and compassionate brothel owner, thrust into the position of unwilling soldier on the front lines of this battle. Lucius Williamson, the brilliant free Negro lawyer oppressed by the very society he now needs to defend, is cursed with a supernatural ability called The Gift to see events others cannot.
