The Guard and the Princess

Although she spoke quietly, she made a loud noise as if to convince both herself and me. "I think love will come in due course." My heart was thumping loudly and rapidly. I tried to slow it down so that the Princess wouldn't hear by taking a few deep breaths.

"But what if it doesn't?"

My inquiry appeared to float in midair. She remained fixed on me with her brilliant eyes for a while without responding. As the guards changed, there were some footsteps in the hallway. The wind outside caused the stained glass window to squeak. Raindrops started to fall.
