The book traces the rise of American theatre from its nascent stages of Lewis Hallam's troupe in the mid-18th century to the latest style of theatre. While the pre-war 19th century theatre was heavily associated with violence and hedonism, the post war 20th century theatre was more pleasurable and aesthetic with its forms, melodramas, comedy, and romance. Today American Theatre has come to be a platform for expression, and a venue for identity exploration for under-represented, minority communities.
