Without disputing this phenomenon, since I consider it fact, as far as poetry is concerned, I prefer to speak of the great aloneness and immense privation of poets, who find their resources constantly reduced to their own shrinking inner worlds.
Does this mean that poets are being obliterated or that their powers are steadily deteriorating? It seems frighteningly possible, but I believe, hope and dare to say no; as a matter of fact, poets are capable of revolutionary resistance to today's totalitarianism, and their resistance can be both hugely important and hugely helpful, historically so.
