DK Great World Atlas

this is a great atlas, a magnificent reference the ultimate geographical reference for today

Totally brilliant atlas...

If you're looking for an obscure town in Zaire, there's better atlases out there (National Geographic, etc.). But if you want to learn about the country, the landscape, the geology, and the geography, this is the one to get. It is incredibly information dense. The maps are brilliant and gorgeous. It's a blast to page through and read. I have an older version, so I don't have the binding problem that some people report of this one. Too bad, since the cartography and design is so good, that it should be printed well too.

Truly great atlas

I can't praise this atlas highly enough. The only possible negative is that it is so great in size. You need a table to lay it open on. It alternates page spreads of standard drawn maps with page spreads of satellite images of the same geographical unit. These images are available on the web, yes, but not correlated with high resolution (paper still beats the screen for legibility in my world) twins filled with geographical information. I discovered this at Borders and gave it as an exchange gift to my brother's family when they visited for Christmas. My youngest niece, 7 years old, was galvanized by the book and took responsibility for seeing that it made it into their car, and then, again, back to the car when they were leaving Grandma and Grandpa's house later in their trip. I finally had to break down and get one for myself. Truly the only problem I face is where I'm going to put it so that it is accessible when a given part of the world comes into view through the news, or through my reading adventures. It may become a summer project to build a table or stand that can hold it open and ready for perusing.

Best ever map, barring none

I thought the National Geographic World map was pretty good, until I boght the DK version. As with almost everything DK, it is simply the best. The information is complete, well presentes and easy to follow. Don't let this book's massive size put you off. It is worth every penny and more.

the geology nerd's first choice

If you're looking to find a specific small town in Europe or Africa, the Times Atlas is better because more of its pages are devoted to road maps and the maps are more cluttered. This DK atlas devotes many of its pages to physical geography, inset explanations of interesting phenomena (e.g., Niagara Falls), and satellite photos. The night-time satellite photos are very useful because they show population density. The Great World Atlas is nice for planning trips, figuring out whether a potential vacation spot is near interesting geographical features such as a group of hills, and thinking about regions of the world. This book would make a fabulous gift because of its lavish printing.
