Talented endurance riders face the race of their lives
Published by Tia , 4 years ago
Teenage sisters Wendy and Christine are talented endurance riders with their tough as nails mounts. When Christine sets her sights on the biggest challenge she's ever faced, The Great Race, Wendy is in her corner. Her dad Mitch, ever the practical one in the family and not a risk-taker, decides to humor her, sure that she'll never make it to race day; certainly she'll tire of such a tough challenge. Her free spirited mother Cora is absolutely on her side, and 100% believes her daughter will make it to the starting line and beyond. Preparing for the race becomes a family, and then a community, affair, as Christine's enthusiasm is infectious. The race will start in Frankfurt, New York and meander 3800 miles until the riders finish in Sacramento, California. Finishers will break records and those in the top 10 will win prize money as well. Riders must have a pit crew that follows them from stop to stop, helping to take care of horse and rider and manage the mobile camp that will house them at night. Soon the whole family, minus Wendy who stays home to mind the farm, is off on this great adventure.
About half of the book is dedicated to preparations for the race, so it's obvious that Christine and her family (with the possible exception of her father) are taking this seriously and that Christine and her mounts are well trained for the event. It makes the possibility of this daunting ride more realistic. The second half of the book follows Christine, her fellow riders, and the race camp along the course, where the reader feels both the excitement of the ride and the hardships of being in the saddle hour after hour, day after day. Horse lovers and endurance riders will appreciate the level of detail that goes into the telling of this story. It was a bit dry in places, and could have benefited from some editing, but overall a fun story to read.
