TG Nisemono is a fictional poet who toils in the poverty, isolation and depravity typical of hedonistic writers who are unable to cope with the ordinary duties associated with monogamy, monotheism and credible employment. Unable to discipline himself to keep to the traditional haiku forms, he is reduced to writing nondescript triplets. He worships several gods, chases several women and falls prey to several vices, but somehow manages to survive. Hiretsuna Inu is a fictional critic who, upon receiving a copy of Nisemono's latest manuscript, decides to answer each of the triplets with one of his own, either reflecting on, or quibbling with, Nisemono's ideas and observations. His reaction to Nisemono's work is complex. And while he is obviously not thrilled with Nisemono's life or writing, he is not entirely dis-approving (at first) although, by the end of the manuscript, the level of his frustration with the writer comes to light.
