The Great Para Elections

By Amit Banerjee

A Durga Puja committee has survived for decades on tea, habit and the shared belief that everyone else is doing it wrong. Then retired professor Provat Sengupta and businessman Bumba Bose each decide that the para needs new leadership: his. One Kolkata park now has two committees, two gates, rival chanda squads, competing Tagore programmes, a shared QR code and a dog whose social-media following is more united than the neighbourhood. Their children quietly calculate a third Pujo. Their wives and the para's mashimas keep the lane running while old qualifications, old grievances and new reels turn every ritual into a campaign. By Dashami, sindoor, immersion and the compulsory peace embrace have become weapons in a war conducted with perfect, catastrophic Bengali civility. THE GREAT PARA ELECTIONS is an affectionate, merciless comedy about Bengali Kaalchaar, committee rivalry and the certainty of saying 'I told you so' after helping create the disaster.
