Book Overview

Seventh grade should be a wonderful year for Katie Roberts. After all, she has twin baby brothers and Lucie, the best friend ever. Too bad Mama doesn't understand that wearing lipstick is how you get invited to snobby Pamela's party. And too bad Miss Casey makes Katie tutor Rudy Pergolizzi, who wears funny pants and doesn't know how to play baseball and act crazy like other boys. As in THE PRIVATE NOTEBOOK OF KATIE ROBERTS, AGE 11, winner of the Nutmeg Award, Katie's characteristic humor and spunk vividly reveal her world of confusing boys, no-nap babies, and the pull and tug of being 12 and having to face growing up.

The Actions of a 12 year old

This book is a really good book for someone that is about to turn 12. It really does tell you how Katie lives her life and everyday she does. To her ts kind of like a symbol. But, luckly, she doesn't care what other people do or think about her. Thats what I like about her. Thats the most coolest thing about her. Her journel is like her diary.

Fun to read

Her mom pays more attention to her twins. Her mom does not let her put on lipstick to wear to school. She is not like other people at school. Her dad works at the trolle car cafe. I liked this book because she is smart. It is the best book ever.

:)

--Katie, a likeable twelve-year-old in the middle of the 20th century, has gotten a new green notebook in her third story, and, as usual, writes about everything in her notebook - her family, her friends, and her private thoughts - and also writes letters to an old friend in New York City while adjusting to the changes that have happened recently; Katie's mother has remarried and they have had twin baby boys. --I like this book so much that I take it out of the library whenever it is available! Sonja Lamut's pictures are wonderful: she draws both "Katie's" drawings, which are very cute, and "photographs" of the family, which are very nicely done. This is, overall, a great book and reluctant readers will probably like it quite a bit for it is easy and fun to read. --Marisa

The best journal I ever read.

I thought the book was very good. I think that the year in which the story takes place (1943) is a little hard for the children to grasp. Kids in the year 1999, would like it if they had more journals in there time, not more than 50 years ago. The best part in the book was the end, when Mrs. Leitstein gets married to a man she met in Texas while she was there for short visit. I loved it when Katie got excited when asked to be the bridesmaid!! Another is when Katie's mom gets hit by a truck. The accident brought her closer to her mom than she ever was before. After that she stopped writing about her mom and how annoying and mean she was. Her mom never let her wear lipstick, but after the accident Katie's mom actually let her wear lipstick and Katie felt much better!! I liked the meaning behind the story. We should appreciate our parents always, even when they make us do things we don't like.

A girl's diary of her life in post-World War 2 Texas.

Katie Roberts hasn't forgetten her father, who died in World War 2, but she loves her new stepfather now, too, and her baby twin brothers. She's adjusted to her life in Texas - she has a best friend, and is doing well at school. If only her mother would realize she's growing up. And if only her stepfather would let her work at his lunchenette, life would be perfect. Until an accident involving Katie's mother makes Katie appreciate her family in a new way.
