Preface: The Great Circle of Awakening
As a couple entering a new season of life, we finally breathed life into a dream long cherished in our hearts. After decades of service as physicians, we retired and quietly took the first step of our long-awaited journey in the scorching stillness of Death Valley, California, in late April.
But this journey was never meant to be mere sightseeing. Each road we traveled became a reflective path through the contours of our own lives. Every mile through the wide wilderness prompted us to ponder the mystery and cycle of human existence. Having spent much of our lives witnessing birth and death in sterile hospital rooms, this journey unfolded as a pilgrimage of the heart-an invitation to slow down and turn inward. Before the boundless landscape, we often felt ourselves shrinking, and within the sacred silence, we finally listened to the quiet voice within.
This "Great Circle" of awakening was something we planned and completed ourselves. Without a compass, we navigated with a palm-sized smartphone and AI guidance, tracing our own route across unfamiliar lands. Having grown up in an analog world, it was deeply moving to journey across the vast western and central United States supported by the very edge of digital innovation. Past and future seemed to meet on the same road, a convergence of time flowing forward and memory flowing back.
In those moments of quiet joy, gratitude flowed easily, and that gratitude became our strength along the road. And so, happiness revealed itself not as a treasure to be chased, but as something always within reach, if we are willing to slow down and notice.
The journey also deepened our awareness of the relationship between technology and humanity. With a single device, we could check the weather, navigate unfamiliar cities, and cross vast terrain. What once required folding maps and asking strangers now unfolded seamlessly with satellites and AI. In unexpected moments, it was our human creativity, courage, and trust in each other that moved us forward.
We marveled at the power of technology, yet recognized that it cannot walk the path for us. We came to believe: only when technology walks alongside human wisdom can a journey gain true meaning. What we experienced felt like a glimpse into how humanity and machines may harmoniously coexist.
That was precisely our awakening.
Our footsteps had traced a great circle-back to the beginning, but with new understanding. The quiet transformation within that circle is the heart of this book. As we now stand at the threshold of another new season in life, we wish to share with you the insights and awakenings gathered on this path.
To those reading this, perhaps you are approaching retirement, or standing at a crossroads, wondering where life might lead next. Perhaps you, too, have a dream quietly waiting. We hope this simple record of ours offers you courage, inspiration, or comfort. Age is just a number. Human beings are capable of awakening and transformation at any time. The path of life can open anew, again and again.
