This story is funny and moving, with a terrific slate of characters. It reminded me so much of growing up in the 80's, but the themes and messages so skilfully woven inside the story is timeless. Come on, these kids play street hockey with homemade nets, they collect comics, they go out in Hallowe'en the old fashined way, with Freddy Kruger masks! Kenny is poor, but better off David doesn't care. He lets him win in a race because Kenny's legs are just too tired from malnutrition and lack of sleep. But he doesn't let him know of course, preserving his dignity. I loved the first person narration as David tells the story. Kenny and David leap off the page with their bond, and boyish shenanigans. DAvid has to move, and Kenny is left all alone , deprived and alone. and friendless. A lot goes on in this book, but the friendship of these two boys shines through, and keeps us reading to the end. Ryan-Lush outdid herself, a novel with true heart, and a message for all .
