The Grammar of Silence
The broadcast has been silenced. The Chancellor has been stopped. And the world is still losing its languages, one community at a time.
Six weeks after the events of The Language of Magic, Lyra Aster returns to a capital that has gone quiet in ways no one else seems to notice. The One Voice project may be dead, but its damage is not - and someone has picked up where it left off. Maren Soldt, once Valerius's most brilliant student, has built a device that can strip a language of everything that makes it alive, leaving the words behind like an empty shell.
Lyra and Caelan - the last Guardian of the First Language, a man who has spent three thousand years paying for every word he speaks in years of his own life - race across provinces and deserts to stop her before her list of targets runs out. But the real discovery waiting for them isn't Maren's device. It's a resonance chamber buried in the desert, holding the memory of an entire civilization that learned, once, how to use the First Language without being destroyed by its cost - by speaking it together.
Lyra is the second voice the prophecy described. What that means, and what it will cost her, is something neither she nor Caelan fully understands - not until they have to use it, with a child's broken lullaby and a dying island depending on the answer.
The Grammar of Silence deepens The Unwritten Trilogy's central question: what do we owe the things we cannot get back, and what becomes possible when we finally learn to carry the weight together?
For readers of literary fantasy who want their magic system built on real cost, their found family earned slowly, and their answers harder than the questions that produced them.
Book Two of The Unwritten Trilogy.
