The Gorge Butcher: A Red River Gorge Thriller

By Curt Boggs

The Gorge doesn't lose people. It keeps them.
When six college students vanish during a rain-soaked camping trip in Kentucky's Red River Gorge, the world wants a simple explanation: a tragic accident, a bad decision, a wilderness search gone cold. Detective Ellie Mercer knows better. The tents are torn. The phones are dead. The forest is too quiet. And beneath a sandstone shelter near the campsite, searchers uncover bones that prove the missing students are only the latest names in a much older nightmare.
As reporters swarm the small town of Slade and desperate families wait behind police tape, Ellie follows a trail of handmade fiber, hidden caves, old disappearances, and impossible eyewitness accounts whispered by survivors who were never believed. Something moves under the rocks. Something watches from the trees. But the deeper Ellie digs, the more terrifying the truth becomes: the most dangerous monster in the Gorge may not be the one people fear.
With help from a haunted local deputy, a legendary backcountry tracker, and a climber whose missing brother may still be alive, Ellie must navigate a maze of cliffs, ravines, stormwater, folklore, and human cruelty before the Gorge claims another victim.
Atmospheric, brutal, and deeply suspenseful, The Gorge Butcher is a wilderness horror thriller for readers who love Appalachian folk horror, serial killer mysteries, cryptid horror, survival suspense, creature-feature dread, and dark small-town investigations where the land itself feels alive.
Some stories are buried for a reason.
Some monsters deserve to stay hidden.
