Differentiated book- It has a historical context with research of the time-The good soldier (original title in English, The Good Soldier: A Tale of Passion) is a novel by the English novelist Ford Madox Ford, published in 1915. In 1998, the Modern Library placed it 30th in its list of 100 best novels of the 20th century. Set just before the First World War, it chronicles the tragedy of Edward Ashburnham, the soldier the title refers to, and his own seemingly perfect marriage and that of two American friends. The novel is narrated using a series of flashbacks in non-chronological order, a literary technique that was part of Ford's pioneering view of literary impressionism. Ford employs the unreliable narrator device to great effect as the main character gradually reveals a version of events that is quite different from what the reader tends to believe from the introduction. The novel is loosely based on two incidents of adultery and Ford's troubled personal life. The novel's original title was The Saddest Story, but after the outbreak of World War I, the publishers asked Ford for a new title. Ford sarcastically suggested The Good Soldier, and kept that name. The good soldier narrates the character of John Dowell, member of one of the two couples whose dissolving relationships form the theme of the novel.
