Ex-con Giscard murders the noted archeologist Professor Geoffrey Blount and then tries to kill the only witness, graduate student Steve Prill. Before dying Professor Blount leaves Prill a conceited parrot and the secret to an ancient treasure mentioned in one of the Dead Sea Scrolls that was hidden in the Israeli hills. Joining Prill in his hunt for the treasure are his best friend from college and four retired US servicemen. The expedition leader is the extraordinary Colonel John Moses. These are the Good Scouts. To reach the prize first, Giscard enlists the services of the sadistic Captain Doug Mills and his gang of brutal thugs. When Mills' men abuse inoffensive Arab neighbors, the villagers blame the Good Scouts for attracting the gangsters. The Second Intifada has everyone on edge, and the Good Scouts begin to wonder if the Arab villagers are also their enemies.Above ground, Moses and Mills struggle to outwit each other in a deadly contest. But is there actually a treasure, or is it just a tall tale? If the treasure is real, how did the ancient Romans fail to find and take it, when they stole everything else of value in the country? If the treasure is still buried, is it worth killing for? Is it worth dying for? Deep underground the earth groans as a tunnel threatens to collapse, and rising water endangers the lives of the Good Scouts. A four way conflict pits the Good Scouts, the Mills Gang, an Arab village, and Nature itself, against each other. The conflict taxes Prill's body, mind, and morale. Teetering near death, Prill discovers that some things are worth far more than either riches or fame.
