The Good Old Bad Days: The Story of a Glasgow Family

At a time when Glasgow's position as European Cultural Capital is attracting publicity, this book tells a different story - that of Glasgow slum life. At the centre is the towering figure of Henry's father, John McInnes, a reader, a thinker, a convict, a railroad bum - whose romantic rebelliousness dominates the book and gives a true flavour of an authentic working-class hero.

good old bad days

from a time in the late Victorian period in Glasgow, Scotland, the author, Henry McInnes, documents several generations of his family from living in squalid conditions and the First World War. John McInnes, is detailed travelling from Portland Maine to Portland Oregon as a hobo. This book makes compelling reading, not to be biased also, but, myself, his son, John, has written about his father, watching him taking writers' block and his battle over the bottle.
