Solid Instruction Plus Nostalgia

My mother got this content in the form of weekly leaflets that went in a binder. As a child I pored over them and chose 4-H projects. This book is a convenient hardback. Not just basic knitting and crochet, but gems like a cast-on I had not seen before in any of my 50 other knitting books. Techniques like tubular crochet, hairpin lace, and tunisian crochet. This is a reference book that also includes some fabulous (and some awful) seventies patterns. So you get theory AND practical projects. The sequence is in increasing order of difficulty, but an index helps you find anything.

good resource/reference book

This book takes you from the basics of choosing yarn and needles and learning the stitches, through making V-necks and pleats, lacy stitches, Jacquard effects, beadwork and other elegant touches. Patterns in the book include baby bootees and children's coats, snowsuits and striped sweaters, pullovers and pant suits, vests, dresses, cushions, placemats, curtains and much more.
