Worth Reading

Written in the time period of 1031B.C. through 1000 B.C. the story of Rebe'kah is told in a fictional account that weaves the reader into the rich history of the Hebrew Bible. It is obvious that Betty Coven did extensive research, giving insight into the daily struggles of these nomadic people. It is an thought provoking novel, enjoyable to read, definitely recommended.

It is also the love story of Rebe'kah the chosen storyteller and Ben. You will be taken into the lives and hardships the people lived then. This book has been well researched and is historically accurate. It is a powerful book that quickly pulls you into biblical times. Through the story and characters the bible will become alive for you. It awakened in me a deep interest in further studying of the bible.

The Gods of Canaan: A Novel Betty Coven has written an intriguing story with warmth and humor, where human foibles need not be evil, tradition can be breached, love can reach across social strata and foes can become comrades and friends. The reader is hardly aware that disbelief has been suspended and accepts that gods and goddesses permeate supernaturally the lives in the story, much as technology permeates modern life. Although of the age and land of King David, the main characters are as familiar to the reader as best friends are. The lives of goat-herders, traders, soldiers, mighty rulers, and women who foretell the future spell out the stories of lovers, children growing into their destiny, and one special peasant girl, Rebe'kah, becoming an influential story teller in the court of King David. Her stories would go down through the centuries and change history.
