When Asherah, goddess of the early Israelites, learns a book is to be written that will change the world, she chooses Rebe'kah, a young nomad, to become storyteller and seeress. The Gods of Canaan recounts Rebe'kah's treacherous journey from a simple nomadic life to the court of King David where she narrates the tales that become the Bible. It is also the story of Ben who rescues Rebe'kah when they are children leading to an enduring bond that grows into a lifelong love. Ben befriends the young David when he comes to King Saul's court and serves him throughout David's rise to the kingship of all the Israelites. Rebe'kah's covenant with the goddess Asherah to become a story teller to kings takes many exciting twists and turns before the final scene.

Where did the stories in the bible come from? Before pens and pencils, the printing press, wire communication, typewriters, phones and computers, there were storytellers. This is how we learned what happened in biblical times. Each generation passed the stories on to the next generation through their storytellers. This book will take you back into that era. It is also the love story of Rebe'kah the chosen storyteller and Ben. You will be taken into the lives and hardships the people lived then. This book has been well researched and is historically accurate. It is a powerful book that quickly pulls you into biblical times. Through the story and characters the bible will become alive for you. It awakened in me a deep interest in further studying of the bible.

The Gods of Canaan: A Novel Betty Coven has written an intriguing story with warmth and humor, where human foibles need not be evil, tradition can be breached, love can reach across social strata and foes can become comrades and friends. The reader is hardly aware that disbelief has been suspended and accepts that gods and goddesses permeate supernaturally the lives in the story, much as technology permeates modern life. Although of the age and land of King David, the main characters are as familiar to the reader as best friends are. The lives of goat-herders, traders, soldiers, mighty rulers, and women who foretell the future spell out the stories of lovers, children growing into their destiny, and one special peasant girl, Rebe'kah, becoming an influential story teller in the court of King David. Her stories would go down through the centuries and change history.
