'The Goddess who rides a Tiger' is the story of the student Tom Corda who makes a trip to India.Travelling by train through that country he is robbed of everything he has got with him.Penniless and without any (I.D.-)papers he wanders through Benares (or Varanasi) and ends up in a slum. Hidden away in a corner in the middle of the night, he is picked up by a nun.He lives then as a guest of some nuns in that slum and learns to know the poor, castless people, who are treated as animals by other people and who, still worse, feel themselves sort of animals as well.Little by little Tom discovers humanity in the illitterate, shy and poor woman Asha.A number of years later he travels again to Benares, now representing the pharmaceutical company 'Medimarket'. The company obtains medicines from a company there, owned by a man, named Amal Maya. This Indian company is a shady business, with Maya in the backstage, but it is very profitable for Medimarket.Tom discovers, bit by bit, what is happening in Maya's business. He is confronted with a child's kidnapping (Asha's daughter) and with child slavery. But to keep one of Maya's staff members out of danger he can not report what he would like to do.In the meantime he discovers that the big boss of Medimarket has engaged him in spite of a medical disability. As an interested party in investigating the possibility of xenotransplantation, he saw in Tom an ideal guinea pig . . .
