The runaway bestseller, now available in paperback

Named a Best Book of the Year by NPR, People, Time, and the New York Times

"Extraordinary . . . Reminds me of Donna Tartt's 1992 debut, The Secret History . . . I was so thoroughly submerged in a rich fictional world, that for hours I barely came up for air." --Maureen Corrigan, Fresh Air, NPR

"This expertly paced thriller ...has the kineticism of a well-crafted miniseries." --The New Yorker

When a teenager vanishes from her Adirondack summer camp, two worlds collide

Early morning, August 1975: a camp counselor discovers an empty bunk. Its occupant, Barbara Van Laar, has gone missing. Barbara isn't just any thirteen-year-old: she's the daughter of the family that owns the summer camp and employs most of the region's residents. And this isn't the first time a Van Laar child has disappeared. Barbara's older brother similarly vanished fourteen years ago, never to be found.

As a panicked search begins, a thrilling drama unfolds. Chasing down the layered secrets of the Van Laar family and the blue-collar community working in its shadow, Moore's multi-threaded story invites readers into a rich and gripping dynasty of secrets and second chances. It is Liz Moore's most ambitious and wide-reaching novel yet.

So so atmospheric and wonderful

Sitting next to an open window, the cold, rain starts to pour. The house fills with the scent of wet dirt. I opened this book and found my surroundings mirrored in the dark pages. I thoroughly enjoyed every section and POV of this book. I felt the Adirondack Forrest all around me with each description, a constant feeling of needing to know where we are in the timeline and the setting to make sure I did not get lost, which felt so common in these woods. This was the type of summer camp mystery that I need more of in my life. I really liked how the author didn’t make the hints between POVs so obvious. She made it more of a lingering impression, which made me want to read more. I will say the only fault I had is that I did guess the few mysteries before they were completely solved. Maybe that was intentional, but it was slightly predicable to me. 4.75/5 (I read it as a library book but I am tempted to buy my own copy on here).

I enjoyed it.

It was a quick read. Thought i new what happened half way though and I was right. It was a nice read.

Moore finally sees the light.

Liz Moore writes from a suburban mindset. Good for readers with the same mindset. Held my interest at times. That's why the 3 stars. Find her stories to be weak. I don't recommend..
