A prominent televangelist's daughter has been found dead in an affluent suburb. The hunt for an elusive crime boss is gaining momentum. It's already a hot summer in Alabama, but more heat bears down on the Heart of Dixie when a small-time drug dealer is found slain in the outskirts of Jefferson County, his face partially flayed and occult symbols carved into his neck and chest. These details don't perturb forensic psychiatrist Mayank "Full Moon" Seth, who is in the business of confronting the macabre. What unsettles him is that the victim was to have been his patient. Seth knows to keep away from the ensuing proceedings, having fallen out several years previously with the politically ambitious local sheriff, who also bears grudges against two dogged detectives working for his office: Detective Sergeant Curtis Chess, a medical school dropout and Seth's best friend, and Chief Deputy Roger Barbeau, for whom the murder is a chilling reminder of a grisly cold case from the era of the Satanic Panic. Upon realizing that their department is compromised, the two lawmen launch an unsanctioned investigation into the ritualistic killing, an investigation Seth is forced to join when he becomes the target of an enemy operating from the shadows. The hunt commences for a vicious destroyer who is cutting a bloody swath through the forests and hills of Alabama. To solve the case, Seth will have to dredge out past horrors from the muddied waters of memory. In doing so, he will learn that demons do not just thrive within traumatized minds, but can well walk outside of them.
