In 1965 a Vermont farm boy fleeing family tragedy saddles up a horse and embarks on a journey across the continent. Along the way he meets people still intrinsically connected to the land; Amish farmers, migrant workers, cowboys, Native Americans. From each new encounter he gathers another piece of the puzzle by which he begins to put back together a fragmented identity and glimpse the framing of his own destiny connected to the whole. More than a coming of age story, The Gleaner is a paean to humanity's vital connection---past, present and future---to land, horses, and the natural world.
