Disappointed that he must care for his invalid father rather than go to University, Sam decides to leave Moravia and emigrate to Texas. He abandons his father to his siblings and boards the train which will go to Bremen, Germany where he will board the ship to Texas. Along the way he meets a young girl and her grandfather. The grandfather dies on the ship and Sam finds himself in charge of the girl. Will he face this new responsibility or will he abandon her as well?
