There are not enough books promoting strong girls but this book does. Its important to help our youth see that yes being female is being strong smart and kind, also the art work is so amazing.

The pictures of Eleni's raging fate in this book are arresting and somewhat disturbing. That's what I like about the tale. It gives you a lot to think about. Does one have a fate? Can it affect other people? What could you do to change it? Can you face your fears? Eleni, the heroine in the story, consistently acts unselfishly. She is willing to leave her home, so her unkind fate no longer blocks the happiness of her sisters. She tries to make amends when her fate destroys the shops of merchants who are kind to her. When she is told a way to change her fate, she takes the advice and bravely goes to confront the fate who has terrorized her in the past. When the fate refuses to listen to her, she persists, until the fate finally gives in. These are traits worthy of being emulated. The one thing I dislike most about the story is its focus on suitors and getting married -- but then, that's Greek culture of the time (and maybe of today, if there's truth in the movie "My Big Fat Greek Wedding").
