THE GIRL WHO BUILT THE SKY

She built it out of everything the town threw away.

Nova Ellery knows what a washing machine is worth dead. She knows the price of copper to the cent, she does her family's books at sixteen, and she has never once had two hundred dollars of her own.

What she has is eleven acres of salvage on Creek Road, a shed that used to be her mother's, and a control board she takes out of a crate one December afternoon and does not write in the ledger.

Four months later, at two o'clock in the morning, something stands up on the workbench - thirty-one inches tall, four legs made from office chairs, a microwave door for a face, and two amber lights that are not sensors and do not do anything at all.

She calls it Tin.

Her brother, who has not spoken a full sentence in six years, starts talking to it.

But a machine built from junk cannot be documented, and a competition wants part numbers. A boy with a forty-one-thousand-dollar laboratory turns out to be the only person who understands what she has made. And on the far side of the old rail embankment, at the back of the property nobody ever walks to, there is a stretch of creek sixty feet long where nothing grows - and a man in a good coat who has offered her father more money than he has ever seen, for reasons that have nothing to do with scrap.

Nobody in this story breaks a rule.

That turns out to be the problem.

A novel about salvage, stubbornness, and the difference between knowing something and saying it out loud.
