Puyallup, Washington, September 1992. For two weeks every fall the fair owns the town, and the town lets it. Single mother Marianne Abrial sends her fifteen-year-old daughter, Lily, off for a Saturday at the fair with her best friend, Kelsey. It is the kind of morning that should frighten no one.
By ten that night the girls' ride home has fallen through. They have split up. Lily stands at a payphone near the edge of the fairgrounds and tells her mother she will call back in five minutes, once she has found a way home.

And Puyallup does what it has always done. It points its fear at the silent man who lives out past the edge of town, so it never has to look at anyone closer.
Marianne does not believe any of it. Her daughter's bed is made. Her homework is half finished. A permission slip for an October field trip waits on her desk. So Marianne starts to keep the paper: every report, every name, every call. She keeps it through the rumors and the reassigned detectives, through the years the case goes cold, and through the long work of being politely ignored.
