When I was young, back in the 1980’s, my mother read this book to my sister and I so often at bedtime that she didn’t have to look at the book. The story rhymes every other sentence, and is such a wonderfully imaginative read. We were mesmerized by the words and rhymes as she read the story from memory and in true character as a storyteller would. The story rhymes every other sentence, and is told with such imagination. I imagined myself living in the town of Itching Down when I was just 6-7 years old. I also read it to my daughters. Great book!

The Giant Jam Sandwich is a great book with detailed imaginative illustrations. I read it with my 7 yr old grandson 14 yrs ago and look to repurchasing it for his 3 yr old sister so we can enjoy it together. It's a keeper!
Still my favorite after 34 years

My brother got this book as part of the Weekly Reader Book Club books in the early 70s. From the first time my parents read the book to me, it was my favorite. Now I have 2 kids of my own and I still consider it my favorite children's book. When we spend the night at my parents, I start reading this book to my kids at bedtime and before I know it my parents are sitting on the edge of the bed listening too. It is a must have.
Childhood Memories.

THE GIANT JAM SANDWICH was one of my favorite illustrated stories when I was a kid. I remember in first and second grade listening to this story at story time in the library. This book was one of those rare books that every kid in the class sat still for because we loved it so much and didn't want to miss one word or not be able to see one of the pictures. The story is rather simple; basically a town is over run by wasps and in order to get rid of the pesky insects, they build a giant jam sandwich. However, the original rhyming pattern adds a touch of flare to the story. Also, the illustrations are a pure joy to look at. This is a great book that most children will enjoy. But be forewarned, it's a book kids might want you to read over and over and over again.
This Has Been a Feast for MORE Than a Hundred Weeks!

This kooky story has been around for 30 years and is about a severe problem that the folks of Itching Down were having when four million wasps flew into town. It tells how the townsfolk figured out a brilliant plan to solve that problem. The rhyming text is fun to read and my kids and I had it memorized in no time and went around the house saying it aloud and laughing our heads off. Even though we've always had a pretty big library of bedtime stories this was the hands down favorite of my four boys and one of mine as well. At first I wasn't too thrilled with the illustrations because they're really cartoonish but the zany characters, all up in arms about the winged menace are actually a perfect compliment to the fun-loving text and they have really grown on me. In this day of chemical pollutants maybe a giant jam sandwich isn't too silly of an idea anyway!
Still a favorite!

This book was one of my absolute favorite books growing up and now it's a favorite of my 3 year-old daughter as well. The rhyming narration makes it easy to memorize and I've read this book so often that I don't even need to read the words any more! The illustrations are detailed, inventive and delightful. The story is whimsical and will have your child asking for this book over and over again. Highly recommended.
A Childhood Favorite

This book was one of my absolute favorites as a child. The rhyming verse makes it very fun to read aloud. The story is just fascinating to young children. I'll have to buy a new copy to replace the tattered one from my childhood! I was very relieved to find that it was still in print, it really is a wonderful children's book.
