Mara has spent her life in Veyra, a poor village that survives beneath the shadow of Black Mountain. When the mountain begins to tremble and breathe, the village council moves its ancient choosing forward and names Mara as the next bride. She has no family left, no wealth, and no powerful person willing to defend her, making her the easiest woman to sacrifice. Yet Mara refuses to accept the old ritual without understanding what it truly means. Before she is sent toward the mountain, Mara receives a strange veil connected to her mother, an ancient key, a stone marked like an eye, and a hidden record containing the names of women who vanished before her. The warnings she uncovers reveal that Veyra's traditions conceal a history far darker than the villagers admit. The brides were never simply offerings to a protective god. They were part of a system designed to contain something imprisoned beneath the mountain. Inside the mountain, Mara encounters Avaron, the mysterious giant whose name has been buried beneath generations of fear and superstition. He is neither the monster the village describes nor the simple god its priests worship. As Mara learns the truth, she discovers that the original purpose of the bride ritual was corrupted over generations. Women were turned into sacrifices to keep a dangerous Shadow contained, while the village transformed their deaths into a sacred tradition. Mara also discovers that her mother, Liora, was connected to the ancient Anchor and had once tried to break the cycle. Now Mara has inherited that burden. When the Hollow King rises and the village itself is revealed to be part of the ritual, Mara must decide whether to obey the tradition that has controlled Veyra for centuries or destroy the mechanism that demands another sacrifice. The final confrontation forces Avaron to face the Shadow he once separated from himself. The darkness is not an outside creature alone, but the abandoned part of Avaron that contains everything he refused to remember: his anger, hunger, cruelty, fear, grief, tenderness, and love. Mara refuses to let either the village or Avaron decide her fate for her. She opens the twelve channels of the ancient Anchor, risking her own life to end the cycle. When the Shadow and Avaron finally reunite, the Hollow King collapses and the curse is broken. Avaron survives, no longer divided, while the people of Veyra are forced to confront the names of the women they sacrificed. Mara tells them to remember the brides and never build another lock from fear. The mountain remains mysterious, and something deeper may still be waiting beneath it, but for the first time Mara and Avaron stand together by choice rather than by ritual.
