It is also the story of what came after: the newspapers that turned a tactical retreat into a "panic-stricken rout" before the facts arrived, the social exile that outlasted Reno's legal exoneration, the slow collapse into isolation and drink that the court's verdict never touched, and the century it took - through a 1967 posthumous reversal and a 1983 wildfire that stripped the battlefield bare for archaeologists - for the physical evidence to finally catch up to what he'd said under oath all along.
