Richard Upton, former scout for Gen. Robert E. Lee flees the south to find a new life. After killing the carpetbagger that occupied his plantation and rescuing his sister, they must leave to avoid being hunted for murder.Their first goal is to reunite with their brother in Kansas City. His brother is also hiding from the Union Army for escaping a prisoner of war camp. While in Kansas City, Richard is reacquainted with an old friend. Sammy Palmer the trusted black man that once ran Richard's plantation. Richards black employees were all free. He had helped Sammy escape to the North when the south was overrun. Their friendship is rekindled and they become partners. Sammy is already in the bounty business and is known as Kid Chocolate.Richard becomes known as a bounty hunter called The Gent. He earns that moniker because he dresses like a gentleman and is polite although he will shoot to kill.They set their sight on starting over in Colorado. This is the tale of that migration to Colorado, the perils that befall them and the many interesting people that are met along the way. By the time they are settled on a ranch, they both have married. They participate and help facilitate the dreams and aspirations over several other friends. This is the way the frontier was grown.
