THE GARGOYLES WATCHED: Secrets and Silence at Lake View High
Milwaukee, 1973. Lake View High School rises six stories in red brick at the edge of the city, its stone gargoyles keeping silent watch over everything that happens within its walls.
Kristen Walker arrives as a freshman with a notebook full of questions, a first-rate mind, and an unshakeable belief that intelligence is protection. She is wrong.
What begins as an after-school conversation about famous women scientists and stolen credit for their discoveries becomes something far darker, a carefully constructed trap. It is a trap laid by a man who has been refining his methods for twenty years. When Kristen finally understands what is happening to her, she discovers what generations of girls before her already knew: the adults who were supposed to protect her will not. The doors she needs to open are locked. The words she needs to say dissolve before she can speak them.
So she finds another way.
The Gargoyles Watched follows Kristen across four years of high school as trauma reshapes her; her coping mechanisms, her relationships, her sense of who she is, and what she is capable of becoming. Her closest friends, Jessica and Rose, watch her change and must ultimately face an impossible question: when the system has failed completely, what does loyalty require?
Set against the backdrop of 1970s Milwaukee, its breweries and frozen lakefronts, its Allen-Bradley Clock Tower keeping patient time over neighborhoods that cannot see what is happening inside their schools, this novel is a raw and unflinching portrait of what it costs a girl to survive when no one is listening.
