This text grew out of a conference held at the University of Essex in December 1992 on British and German perspectives on the future of European security. It assesses the post-1989 changes in terms of threat perception, the growing importance of economic, democratic, migrational and environmental factors in security considerations; the role of a larger, freer and potentially stronger Germany in the new European security configuration; the adaptation of the main security institutions; and US-European relations.
