He was born in the Portuguese capital, Lisbon, as Fernando Martins de Bulh?s. Even though writers from the 15th century say that his parents were Vicente Martins and Teresa Pais Taveira and that his father was the brother of Pedro Martins de Bulhes, the ancestor of the Bulho or Bulhes family, Niccol Dal-Gal thinks that this information is less certain.
