The Friend Who Changed
Maya has known exactly one version of Emma Rossi her whole life - the one who saved her a seat, texted back within minutes, and sat beside her at every choir rehearsal since fourth grade. This year, that Emma is harder to find.
Emma has traded warm-up chairs for backstage rigging, choir practice for tech crew call times, and their old inside jokes for a whole new language of cues, lighting boards, and soundchecks. Maya tells herself it's fine. It's normal. People branch out. But every empty seat beside her in choir feels like a question she doesn't know how to ask out loud - is Emma still her best friend, or just someone she used to sit next to?
While Maya tries to figure out where she still fits in Emma's new world, the rest of the Common Ground Club is building something bigger than either of them expected: the Living Welcome Wall, a painted, permanent piece of the school meant to say the same thing the lunch table always has - you belong here, no explanation required. Sophie designs it. Avery schedules it. Jade bolts it into place. And somewhere in the middle of paint cans and floodlight plans, Maya realizes that holding onto a friendship might require the exact same thing the wall does: room to change shape without falling apart.
When a rumor about the spring musical threatens to turn Emma's new world against her, Maya has to decide whether stepping back was ever really the plan - or whether real friendship means showing up for someone even after they've become someone slightly different than the person you started with.
Some friendships end when people change. The ones worth keeping just learn a new shape.
Book Five in The Common Ground Club continues the story of five friends learning that growing apart and growing up aren't always the same thing - and that the people who matter most are worth re-learning, again and again.
