Reviews of The Fox Island Cup Classic Day Publishing, 2004, 111 pp. ISBN: 1-59404-023-0 Genre: Young Adult Subgenres: Fiction / Sailing -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Barbara Lloyd McMichael The BookMonger From The Olympian Middle-grade and older kids with an interest in sailing might enjoy "The Fox Island Cup," by Gig Harbor author Gene L. Nihart. The plot concerns a 12-year-old girl who enters her sailboat in a race and makes new friends along the way. The book has some interesting insights on sailing, particularly in the South Sound, but I wonder if its heavy emphasis on sailing technicalities might not limit its appeal to all but the most gung-ho of junior mariners. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "The Fox Island cup. what an interesting story! It brought back a lot of fond memories." - John Wood, former junior sailor and sailing instructor. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "I did a lot of sailing when I was a teenager. I couldn't believe all I learned reading The Fox Island Cup." - Carol Hostetler. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Review by Conan Tigard, ReadingReview.com 12/30/2004 Sammy is twelve years old and an accomplished sailor. She often races her boat, the Gull, around Fox Island in the state of Washington trying to beat her previous time. The Gull is old and she is always being harassed by the boys in the yacht club sailing school because of her boat. Brett, the worst of the bunch, likes to pass her on the water and make rude remarks about her boat. When Sammy's mother told her that the Fox Island Cup was approaching, she had already made up her mind not to enter, knowing she couldn't win. But then in walks Todd, a new boy at school, and he shows interest in Sammy's sailing. After taking Todd for a trip around the island in the Gull, they talk about the race and Sammy decides she WILL enter it. She and Todd start doing research to find out what the tides will be like on the day of the race. They work on the Gull and do a lot of practice runs. But even with all the work they are doing, Brett and the other boys have faster boats. Will Sammy be able to beat these stuck-up pig-headed boys in a race? She is not sure, but she knows that she will have to use all of her wits and skills to do so. The Fox Island Cup by Gene L. Nihart is a Young Adult fictional book about sailing. It is about one girl's struggle to be accepted for who she is . . . a truly good sailor. But because she doesn't have money, a really nice boat, and is a girl, she can't seem to ever be accepted by the boys she learned to sail with in the yacht club sailing school. This book is intended for readers age 9 and up. The Fox Island Cup is a fun story that moves along at a good pace. I had never read a book on sailing before and am not a sailor. Yet, I didn't
