This is the first full study of the Four Seasons tapestries at Hatfield House, commissioned by Sir John Tracy in the late 16th or early 17th century. Drawing on four continental emblem books, Michael Bath deciphers the tapestries complex iconography, including 170 Latin-emblemed border images never previously analysed. The book reveals deep ties to Netherlandish prints, highlights the role of emblems in early modern English culture, and sheds light on the design, purpose, and production of English tapestries.
