These eloquent words were written by an uncited correspondent for the New York Tribune, in reference to the lawlessness of the Kansas cowtown of Abilene. The writer went on to claim that "gathered together in Abilene and its environs is the greatest collection of Texas cowboys, rascals, desperados, and adventuresses the United States has ever known." One can only surmise that the correspondent had never visited the Four Corners of Death.
