Thomas Wriothesley enjoyed a remarkable rise to fortune during the reign of Henry VIII. He started as a court official in the office of Cardinal Wolsey and then worked closely with Thomas Cromwell. After the fall of Crowell he held senior positions for the king, eventually becoming Chancellor.
He was able to profit from the dissolution of the monasteries in the late 1530s and thus became a very wealthy landowner. In 1547 he was created Earl of Southampton.
