Jordin, Madjuk of Naar and usurper of the throne of Lumbeygoe, has summoned the Witches of Beestwyk to the Cavern of Endless Grief to consult the dark forces of the netherworld vis vis his future. There, in the damp, dank and dismal cave (it's a sword and sorcery yarn, so expect absolutely awful alliteration) the ugly sisters confirm Jordin's worst fear. His sworn enemy and potential nemesis, Gorm the Avenger, did not perish on the Island of Improbable Doom, but is plotting to restore the deposed King Fumble to the throne. Meanwhile, the Avenger's blood-brother Ranuk has been arrested and flung in to the notorious Dungeons of Naar. Jordin is convinced the announcement of the prisoner's forthcoming execution will lure Gorm into attempting a rescue. Unfortunately, the Delirian is otherwise engaged, adrift in an open boat, leaving just one man in Lumbeygoe with the courage to attempt to break in to the dungeons. Unfortunately for Ranuk, that man is Earwax. Can the little hunchback weasel his way in to the supposedly impregnable hellhole and break Ranuk out of it again in time to join the uprising, or are they both doomed to perish in the attempt?All will finally be revealed when the principal characters (and practically everyone else in the trilogy) collide in the showdown at the mountaintop Fortress of Improbable Destiny.
