This book taught me empathy

When I was a young boy, this simple story taught me about empathy, compassion, and the need for friendship. It remains my favorite story some two and a half decades after I first read it. I would strongly urge any parent to read it to their young children or, better yet, offer it as reading material for a new reader to tackle on his or her own.
