Recently widowed Matt Duvall sells his software business in order to spend more time with his young daughter Emily during their period of mourning. Due to attempts by his ex-mother-in-law to gain custody of his daughter, Matt moves his family from Boston to a rural community in his home state of Maryland. Even though their new dwelling, an antebellum Victorian estate on 35-acres, is much larger than they need, Matt thought the bargain too good to ignore. Shortly after moving into their new home, Emily makes an imaginary friend named Deedee. Deedee tells Emily she lives with her parents in a graveyard just a few yards from the house. Somewhat alarmed at the prospect of a gravesite in his backyard, Matt enlists help of the town librarian Sasha Mason as he delves into the property's long history. Matt's investigation takes several unexpected turns. As he learns what he can about the previous owners, he makes a discovery in a hidden room. The contents of the room coupled with what he learned about the previous owners, makes him consider leaving the house. Before he can act though, an unexpected event eliminates this course of action from consideration, leaving him with no other choice but to see where the situation leads.
