Devora, the weaver, must make a net for the Fog, who promises not to take away her brother, a fisherman, if she complies. When her brother does not return from the sea the next day, Devora realizes... This description may be from another edition of this product.
Children whose families have ever waited on shore for their fisherman and crabbers and lobster men to come home from the sea will surely delight in this magical yarn, of a brother and sister who lost their parents to the fog, and then outwitted it. Devora and her brother Jarem lived alone with their baby sister Christaba making their way in life as best they could. Jarem fished. Devora wove. One night the fog crept into her home and whispered. If Devora would weave, the fog would promise to keep her loved ones safe. Devora took this pact with the devil, but as she wove planned and plotted. When her net was done, Jarem disappeared into the fog, and Devora rowed after him, listening for her baby sister Christaba's little golden bell, which she'd tied to a corner of her net. At last, Devora found the bell, and attached the net to her boat to begin the long row back into shore. She built a huge fire, and began hauling in the net of fog, and burning it, in sections. What came next will surprise children, and even the parents reading to them. And the net of fog these days remains only "in a story people told around the fire on cold winter nights." Brilliant.
A family favorite

This book has been a favorite of my children for years. They each requested a copy of their own, so they could someday share it with their children. The story is somewhat dark, and mystical, without being frightening. The main character is a female who demonstrates wonderful, positive attributes of strength, determination, loyalty, and love. The illustrations are hauntingly beautiful, capturing the mood and atmosphere of the story.
