Gripping, but a missed opportunity

This book is the sequel to The Stone Arrow, and picks up immediately after that story. Tagart, who has now rejoined the tribe of his father, finds disturbing signs that the Flint Lord is planning an attack on the nomadic peoples of the forest. The only way to get the tribes to listen to him is to quickly gain power by becoming a chief himself. But, the challenge process is dangerous, and doubly so when his opponents are willing to cheat. And worse, the Flint Lord is building an army of mercenaries, and how long will he wait before he puts his plans in motion?I'm rather at a loss in rating this book. The story is exciting, and very well written, with lots of danger, battles and intrigue. The downside is that, the author does not give the reader an sort of feeling for a Neolithic setting - the kingdoms he describes, as well as siege engines and organized armies is straight out of a completely different time. I think that the author missed a chance to make a great story set in an interesting time. But, that said, this is a gripping read, one that I enjoyed immensely. If you are looking for a story that will transport you back to Neolithic Britain, then look elsewhere, as this story will deeply disappoint you. But, if you are look for an intriguing story of barbarians vs. civilization, then you will enjoy this book.
