A man living in the city discovers that his roommate, Bob, passed away in the night. A roll of film left behind in the pocket of Bob's jacket leads him to try to discover more. The narrator comes to terms with his own mortality, isolation, and misanthropic inclinations by visiting the places and the people that Bob had photographed. He ends just as isolated as he began, but with revelation that he must escape the camera lens of self-consciousness.
