Millaney and her Shrkai sister Sarnay travel to Shrkai territory to discuss the fate of the dragons. They meet Darvin a young man who has been under house arrest for a crime committed when he was but young boy. The Shrkai believe in a strong community bond and that even felony criminals are able to be rehabilitated through fellowship in the community, that their light just needs to be nurtured. Darvin's light has been buried deep for years, until he meets Millaney and not only is his light kindled, but something else that has been dormant in him since the crime. With the return of the dragon clan, the Shrkai are re-entrenched in old beliefs. Humans are still not fully trusted by the Shrkai on the mainland despite years of peace. The balance of the gods is tipped toward chaos as a new goddess ascends and takes her place among the ancient deities. Millaney and her father go from dignitary to fugitive when a Shrkai soldier is found brutally murdered. The "dust of difference" becomes quite visual. The light is the same, but it can only be seen by those who seek it. Darvin and Millaney must team up to battle the god of chaos and the newest goddess to try and save Millaney's father. Will their light be strong enough? Will it even be seen? Or will the dragon clan succeed in starting their war on humanity? How long will the light flicker before it is extinguished?
