Maxy Awards "Book of the Year"The international bestselling novel about Murray McBride, a lonely 100-year-old man who's outlived just about everyone he's ever loved. But when he meets a boy awaiting a... This description may be from another edition of this product.
The tension between the 10 year old and 100 year old is humorous. Just their attempts to communicate are difficult, years and cultures apart, they sometimes seem to speak two different languages. That tension does not stop them from becoming friends. A heart warming tale. Four stars instead of five: the end of the story disappoints. The focus on the two main characters is strong to the finish, but near the story's end, supporting characters are either introduced with little character development, or treated in an abrupt, somewhat casual regard. We will be reading this in a senior book club. I will stay quiet on thoughts about the end and am curious to see how others in the group view it.

The 5 Wishes of Murray McBride is a provocative & beautiful read

The book begins with a man who is 100 yrs old. You might expect it to be a memoir, but no, it is a story of unlikely friendship, wishes and purpose. A book you can't wait to read the outcome, but at the same time need to stop for reflection now & then. Took me a long time to know it is 1 of 3. I have just finished the 2nd, The Final Wish of Murray McBride & it is very good too. Can't wait to start the final book, The 1st Wish of Murray McBride
A truly special book

This is one of the best books I've read in a long time. It was an emotional read...so have lots of tissues around. I literally sobbed out loud at times.
This book will tug on your heart strings, but you'll also be cheering on Jason as he, Tiegan, and Mr. McBride struggle to fulfill the five wishes. As I read Murray McBride's thoughts, I could see some of the senior adults in my church and imagine them expressing the same feelings. But what can a precocious 10-year-old boy and a precious 10-year-old girl do to change this old man's outlook on life and death.
This is definitely one to put on your to-read list. It provided some valuable life lessons, made you sit down and take a hard look at what really matters to you, had you chuckling at some of the antics Jason and Murray they performed, and realizing the even a young child can make a huge impact in the lives of many people.
I cannot begin to express how much I appreciate the opportunity NetGalley gave me to read an ARC in exchange for my honest opinion. This was a treasure and a story that will stay with me for years to come.
