Sound Advice for both Parent and Child

THE 5 KEYS TO WELLNESS (UNLOCK HEALTH AND WELLNESS FOR LIFE), as written by Kelly Mather (not only a fine writer but also a CEO of a healthcare organization) and illustrated by Lisa Schneller, may be just the sort of significant book to add to the lists of gifts for children. This is an informative and practical guide for parents to introduce their children to the world of good health - and how very important a contribution to our future this is! Cleverly using the concept of unlocking a treasure chest containing the secrets of wellness (what child can resist this approach?), the five keys to wellness are gradually explained, discussed, illustrated and reiterated, then actually scored on an accompanying sheet to challenge children to participate. The five keys are GENERAL HEALTH, SELF LOVE, BREATHING, POSITIVE CHOICES, BALANCE and TRUST, and within these broad categories are lessons on how to improve the mind and body and spirit in language and pictures children can easily assimilate. Using just the right amount of humor and a healthy portion of philosophy Mather makes her points so clearly that every child should be able to start on the pathway of 'wellness'. The important adjunct here is that by reading this book to children, parents/grandparents/friends bolster their own concept of health, and it would be hard to imagine that any caring parent wouldn't subsequently take a leading role model stance - or suffer the embarrassment of the newly informed child! This is a very fine addition to the serious library of families. Grady Harp, November 07

A great way to learn about health

At first glance it looks like a children's book--it is. And it looks like a book on health--it is. It is a book on physical and mental good health and how to achieve both. Kelly Mather's book is best read and discussed with your child(ren) and with your entire family. Learn the ways to feel good-- REALLY good, and to be healthy and happy, yes, these do go together. You can't have one without the other. Lisa Schneller's illustrtions will draw your children into the treasure hunt for health. Review by Wanda C. Fundamental life lessons that are real and have significant consequences to your life and happiness.

Wellness is as much an attitude as it is a goal. There are many things involved in achieving the wellness goal, and many of them are mental. It is necessary to be positive and to always maintain an optimistic attitude towards life. However, it also involves a great deal of work, making choices that appear to be a sacrifice, but in fact are not. That cookie may taste good, but the yummy part is only short-lived. The longer-lived satisfaction of feeling good all over is a greater reward, and is a positive feedback loop. Like many other things in life, the hardest part is getting started, which is where this book is valuable. The earlier one starts on the wellness track, the better life you lead, and this book is designed to get children an early start on that path. The message is one of positive choices and how valuable they are. Written at a level that can be understood by children in late elementary school, the prose is direct, yet soft. The illustrations are colorful and also direct, there is no attempt at cutesy filler that ends up being clutter. My daughter is too old to appreciate this book, however if it had existed when she was in elementary school, I would have purchased it and had her read it several times. These lessons can be classified as "fundamental life lessons", because they are real and have significant consequences to your life and happiness.
