The First Year

Author: ?+ Crystal Liechty Description:

Beth's first year of marriage may be the last . . . There has been a lot of debate over the centuries as to what really took place that day in the Garden of Eden. But I know the truth. Adam left the toilet seat up for the millionth time, and Eve decided it was payback time - eternal damnation style. Barely into her first year of marriage, Beth is still getting used to the transition. Her husband, Mike, is everything she could ask for - she has no regrets. At least until her ex-boyfriend, Charlie, returns from the Marines, begging for a second chance and calling into question every decision she's made since their painful break-up. Despite her steady refusals, Beth begins to wonder if Charlie is right. Did she only marry Mike to hide from Charlie? When she catches Mike in a trust-shattering lie, Beth is suddenly faced with two men who have betrayed her. Which betrayal is worse? And which man deserves a second chance?

Great book for a fun read!

I loved this book. Crystal is a great author that keeps you interested, even if the situation is unbelievable. What's the likelihood you would still have unresolved feelings for a guy after seven years and marrying someone else in the Temple!?! And that he would show up, just when you're having issues. Having issues in the first year is pretty realistic though! I would have loved it if she hadn't taken so long to figure out what she really wanted.

Life, love, and forgiveness in Mormon romance

As an ex-Mormon and an atheist, I came to this book thoroughly prepared to dislike it. What I found was a charming novel with interesting characters. Crystal Liechty puts a twist on the typical romance by starting AFTER the wedding. Her impulsive heroine, Beth, aims for love with her husband and loyalty to her friends. What Beth finds is that nothing is easy in life. Liechty is clearly a writer with a promising future. If you enjoy Mormon romantic fiction, you can't do better than this. For that reason I give the book five stars. I found the book's perspective a bit narrow at times. I would suggest pairing it with works on other religions that inspire an equal devotion in their followers. "Infidel" by Ayaan Hirsi Ali might be a good choice. Infidel

Well above average!

The tongue-in-cheek cover drew me instantly to this book, at which point I flipped it over and read the blurb on the back. While the story line could initially belong to any book in the endless sea of new fiction, Crystal Liechty does a fabulous job of distinguishing not only her extremely entertaining characers, but also herself as a talented young author, who has some serious wit eating away at her. This book acheived a beautiful balance of humor, tragedy, and poignant insights into the lives of those the story follows. You may accidentally learn a valuable life lesson while laughing out loud!

I laughed, I cried, I couldn't put it down!

"The First Year," was a great, entertaining read. The dialogue is witty and unique and makes you really connect to the main character, Beth. It isn't long into the book before you feel like she could be one of your good friends. The plot was interesting and kept me going from beginning to end. The characters were well developed and varied. It's the kind of book that makes you wish you had a whole day with nothing to do so you can just read and read and read. I loved it!

Great read!

This is one of those books that you pick up for something to read and then find you can't put it down! The writing is fresh and the dialogue is witty, not contrived. It feels like eavesdropping on real people. It has a lot of warmth and humor, plus a poignant scene or two, but nothing sappy. And it has a satisfying resolution. Go on, get it and read it .... you'll like it!
