Kisti Newcombe is a street smart criminal defense lawyer who pushes courtroom limits, taking advantage of less talented prosecutors and jury prejudices. After winning an acquittal in a particularly heinous case, Kisti questions the value of her work, and volunteers to represent children in need of legal services.She is appointed to represent Chipper Waldron, an autistic teen whose parents and sister were brutally murdered in a home invasion. Chipper is caught in the middle of relatives fighting for control of the sizable estate that the teen is set to inherit. But police uncover new evidence and Chipper is charged with the murders of his family. Kisti finds herself back in court, trying to find a way to represent the non-communicative autistic boy. In the process, Kisti breaks the first rule of a criminal defense lawyer -- she begins to care about her client.
